Portugal is now setting a new standard for marine conservation in Europe. The country unveiled a new protected marine area around the Gorringe Ridge in the Atlantic, encompassing Europe's tallest seamounts. This addition, along with two smaller areas, boosts Portugal's total protected sea share to an impressive 27%, positioning it as a leader in marine protection. According to Environment Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho, Portugal is now "the most advanced country in the world" in marine protection, combining continental and insular territories.
On the same day, Colombia announced its intention to protect two remote and biodiverse coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea. New MPAs will be established across Serranilla and Bajo Nuevo, covering 3,800 square kilometers of critical marine habitat. This move is particularly significant for Colombia, one of the world's "megadiverse" countries, and will strengthen efforts to protect biodiversity against fishing pressures, benefiting both the rich ecosystems and the local Raizal ethnic community. Expeditions by National Geographic Pristine Seas have documented thriving shark populations and flourishing Caribbean corals in these areas, highlighting their vital importance.
Adding to this global effort, the government of São Tomé and Príncipe in Central Africa revealed plans for eight new marine protected areas, covering approximately 93 square kilometers. These designations mark a crucial first step for the island nation towards its commitment to protecting 30% of its land and sea by 2030. The new MPAs will include both highly restricted zones for recovery and sustainable use zones for artisanal fishers. This community-led initiative aims to enable the recovery of declining fish stocks, benefiting both nature and the local coastal communities who rely on healthy oceans for their food and livelihoods. As fisherman José Pires Gomes expressed, these protected areas are "very important because if it’s protected, the fish will reproduce, and no one can get in there."
These collective actions from across the globe demonstrate a powerful, united front in safeguarding our planet's precious marine ecosystems, ensuring a healthier future for ocean life and the communities that depend on it.
