Hero Crane Operator, Facing Terminal Illness, Receives Heartwarming Bucket List Surprise

A true hero, Glen Edwards, the crane operator who famously rescued a construction worker from a burning high-rise in late 2023

Since rescuing a construction worker from a burning high-rise he has received a deeply moving gift in recognition of his bravery. Edwards, 66, who is now battling a terminal cancer diagnosis, had a humble bucket list wish granted, along with some incredible surprises. Last year, in a moment of extraordinary courage, Edwards navigated his crane through thick smoke and strong winds to position a rescue basket, allowing a trapped worker to escape a blaze in Reading. His quick thinking undoubtedly saved a life, earning him a hero's reputation in the community.

Recently, Edwards shared that his cancer, which he likely had even on the day of the rescue, has returned and spread. Upon learning of his diagnosis and his selfless act, Bucket List Wishes Charity immediately reached out. Gini Hackett, the charity's founder, personally connected with Glen, determined to fulfill one of his deepest desires.

Edwards, ever humble, didn't ask for lavish trips or grand gestures. His simple request was for new flooring and a garden shed for his recently moved-into home – practical improvements he genuinely needed. "He’s really humble, what he did was incredible. He is a real hero to us so we absolutely had to do something for him," Hackett told ITV.

In a heartwarming display of gratitude, Bucket List Wishes went above and beyond. They not only provided the shed and flooring but also surprised Glen with brand-new kitchen appliances, a generous gift voucher for new bedding, and an unexpected fishing trip to the picturesque seaside town of Swanage.

Edwards recounted the intense moments of the rescue, describing how the smoke was "absolutely intense" and made it nearly impossible to see the worker. Yet, knowing the man had two young daughters, he persevered. The heartfelt letter he later received from the rescued worker brought tears to his eyes, cementing the profound impact of his heroism. This story is a powerful reminder that extraordinary courage is often found in the most unassuming heroes, and that kindness can return in truly meaningful ways.
