The Rise of the Hands-On Dad: A Father's Full Heart and Full Schedule

In a heartwarming sign of changing times, more fathers than ever are embracing the role of primary caregiver, demonstrating that a "full heart" often comes with a "full to-do list."

This shift in fatherhood is benefiting families and society alike, as dads become more deeply involved in their children's daily lives. Andrew Cattanach, a freelance writer from Glasgow, never anticipated becoming a stay-at-home dad. Yet, for the past five years, he's been the primary carer for his two daughters, five-year-old Catriona and one-year-old Isla, and he wouldn't have it any other way. His days are a whirlwind of nappies, meal prep, school runs, playtime, and bedtime stories – a demanding but incredibly rewarding schedule.

While Andrew admits to the universal challenges of full-time parenting – the sleepless nights, the lack of adult company, and the occasional "SpongeBob" overload – his overwhelming sentiment is one of joy and fulfillment. "I know I’ll look back at all these experiences and be nothing but delighted that I did this," he shares, valuing not just the big milestones but also the countless small, tender moments of watching his girls grow and interact.

Andrew's journey highlights a significant societal trend: Millennial fathers, on average, are spending triple the amount of time with their children compared to dads in the 1960s. This increased involvement fosters stronger family bonds and richer developmental experiences for children.

Despite some initial social adjustments, Andrew has found his "group" among other parents and feels fully accepted in his role. He emphasizes that the biggest challenges of full-time childcare are universal, regardless of gender. Being a stay-at-home dad has also deepened his empathy for all primary caregivers.

For Andrew, fatherhood is "probably no job better in the world." His enthusiasm is infectious: "If they are up for it, then, yes, they should absolutely go for it, no doubt," he advises other potential stay-at-home dads. "There are hardships involved, but, really, it’s just wonderful. Honestly, just the greatest thing." This joyful embrace of hands-on fatherhood paints a beautiful picture of modern family life and the invaluable difference a present dad makes.
